Drive was probably one of my favorite movies of 2011 - a beautiful, slow boil with brutal payoff. we had some of the soundtrack playing earlier in the night, and it made me want to do something with the movie - this is the "driver" donning that creepy stunt-man mask.

this weekend was the Tippett Studio holiday party, and @ last year's shindig some of us started a little competition, taking some blank dunnies and turning them in to whatever our hearts desired. it was an awesome little addition to the already fun times. this year we decided to continue it, but step it up to the larger munny figures.

the turnout was AWESOME this year, and we had a full designated wall to display them this time around, so it actually felt like a small art gallery when you entered the room. there were some truly great pieces this year, and i'm hoping that stirs people up and this will become an even larger event in the years to come.

this year i decided to do a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. and i left him without a weapon, so he could be any turtle i wanted him to be (the originals all had red bandannas, so no that's not necessarily raphael) - i unfortunately didn't remember to take very many photos of my progress, but i did get a few and wanted to post 'em up!

Mutant Land is loosely based on the world of Mutant World by Jan Strnad & Richard Corben. It would be pretty great to get this developed in to a full feature..

Cowboys vs. Smurfs - Double Opening Weekend

so this weekend marked the opening of TWO films that i had the pleasure of working on. the first was The Smurfs, in which we tackled Azrael (the cat) over at Tippett Studio. and the second was Cowboys & Aliens, which consisted of some alien and spacecraft wrangling back at ILM.

i had a great time working on both, and it fulfilled a very large goal for me to be able to work on a movie starring harrison ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time). it's also fun seeing two movies that are so different go head to head on an opening weekend, and actually come out neck and neck :)

American Carny (Drawaholic: Carnies)

so i actually wrangled up some time to paint up last week's carny sketch for the DRAWAHOLICS blog. it's been a good long while since i've attempted to go this extensive with the painting. it feels good to get my digital brush wet again ;P - i decided to keep it black and white, give it a more era-appropriate feel (and man is it nice only worrying about tone and not having to deal with that whole, COLOR thing, haha)

i definitely won't be taking all the submissions this far, but hopefully i can keep it up with a few of 'em..

oh and yes, this was based on the classic painting American Gothic

Tippett's work on Kitty Galore for Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore earned a nomination in the Visual Effects Society for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture. I'm so happy that they're able to acknowledge the great work done by the studio on this character (regardless of the film's overall reception)! Way to go!

Piranha 3D

so, somehow, the unrelenting gods of cinema have granted Piranha 3D an 85% (it's actually going up last i checked, it was 81%) on rotten tomatoes. we had a very very very small amount of work on it at tippett (but i swear it was still about 3.77347 billion fish), and i don't even know if we got credited for it! haha.. anyways, quality of most of the other fish aside, it sounds like this movie has hit it out of the park when it comes to cheezy-b movie awesomeness. and may actually be worth getting smashed out of your mind to go see christopher lloyd and richard dreyfuss in a storm of blood, booze and bare-lady (and man) parts.

Cats & Dogs Schwag

i did these (very late mind you) as pieces meant for crew schwag on my first movie, cats & dogs: the revenge of kitty galore.

the first is seamus, the pigeon, who was voiced by katt williams. and as you may or may not know, katt has had a few mugshots in his day (one of them during the production of this movie) :P so i decided to give seamus similar treatment :) mugshot coffee mugs anyone?

the second is the main villian, kitty galore. she is hairless, and has never forgiven the world for making her so - here we've caught her in the act of trying rectify her situation with a little moose hair and elmer's.

Drawaholic 01: January - Hoofed Animals

the first step, in a year-long twelve step program. over yonder, on the newly-started blog called "Hi. My name is.. and I am a drawaholic" we've got a year long animal theme going -- a different type of animal each month, and a different animal within that month's type, each week. for example january's theme is hoofed animals, february's is primates and so on.. the GOAL is to get people to do at least one drawing, sketch, doodle, painting, WHATEVER.. a week.

god knows i've been trying to get myself to draw as often as i used to, for a couple years now, with little success. so here's hoping :P

this month only had three weeks' worth, due to getting a late start after the holidays.

not quite an oscar-worthy film (sooooooaked in sarcasm, slathered - can you even move, weighed down by all that sarcasm? no. you can't.) but i had an incredible experience working on this movie, and have met so many amazingly talented people - i can't even begin to tell you how much i've learned and grown over the last year, slaving over these animals..

Tippett Secret Santa

So the tradition @ Tippett Studio, is that eveyrone that participates in secret santa, has to make their gift. You draw someone's name, with a bit of info on the person, and you have to make them a gift! no store-bought gifts, and NO I.O.U.s!!! Some of the past gifts that I've been shown over the year have been INCREDIBLE! So I felt obligated of course to take part in the awesome seasonal activity.

I luckily got the name of someone that I knew, one of my leads from Cats & Dogs -- Mike Brunet. Brunet is a raging-Canadian with a lack of hair and a massive jaw line, and a ridiculously talented animator.

I of course fell to my default for secret santa: round #1; illustrating. I did a full size 27"x40" movie poster, inspired a little by some old serial adventure and james bond posters.

I also pulled a bit of a prank on Brunet at the Tippett Christmas party (where the gifts were handed out). He has had a tough time receiving gifts in the past, half of the time receiving I.O.U.s or lame store bought things (the two BIG NO-NOs). But the good ones that he's had, are REEEAAALLLY GOOD. So not only did I HAVE to finish, it had to be something big, and worthy. After ensuring that I had the real gift finished and ready to go, I got him a decoy gift, to make him THINK he was getting an I.O.U. before getting his real gift. This of course is funniest to the people that know him -- success! I'll include video of the gift giving for the people that didn't get a chance to see it in person.

23 - the end of a year

another birthday gone; this year held a lot for me (year and a half technically, let's just consider it my entire 23rd year and the months leading up to it) i also had a lot of expectations jumping in, 23 itself has always had a bit of it's own significance for me. i am anything but disappointed and there is so much to look back on; a few less than good--there are still some things weighing on the back of my mind, but most occurrences have been beyond great, and life-altering; and i am astounded to see what has unfolded since the beginning of 08. pretty much every aspect of my life has been altered and pushed into a new direction whether it be large or small; and what else can you ask for, other than to grow and to change? i've come a long way, and i have a lot of great memories, and though there are a few unresolved matters, i think everything is moving in the right direction. regardless, i'm sad to see my 23rd year gone for good. but i'm also feeling more than ready to take on 24, so let's do this thing. moving on. next song.

post script - perhaps it's finally time to get my 23 inked once and for all. time to hit the drawing board.

so a few of the peeps at tippett contribute to a little blog called monster'n, which is basically an excuse for people to get together and draw monsters and other messed up shit! how can you beat that?! anywho, i finally whipped up a submission. i'm not going to bother with back story on the subjects, but i'll post the doodles up here, since my posts have been running dry as usual.. so hopefully, if i can force myself to do maybe one of these a week, it'll allow me to keep my drawing chops in shape (a little at least) and perhaps remedy the lack of activity here.

In light of leaving Cinematico, I wanted to draw up some kind of "thank you/farewell for now" piece for the three head-honchos; Brittnell Anderson, Gustavo "Goose" Manriquez and Marco Bertoldo. And if you've been to the studio, you know that there is a shared affinity for old school/foreign movie posters.

Like I said, I've really enjoyed my time at Cinematico, and have learned so much (work-wise and not) from these guys. Hope they like the poster, and I'm sure we'll be working on even more offensiveness later down the road!

I've had a blast at Cinematico over the past.. almost 2 years, wow.. and will always have a special place in my bosoms (yes, both of them) for those guys; but I'm finally taking that first leap into film and cannot WAIT to get started!

one day later! a new record for me!

a pass on color/texture, i could call it done, but i'm still going to go back and play with it a bit. i also took a lot of the colors into a very vibrant area for a change, that tends to be ground that i don't tread on very often.. high contrast, full black, full white, and colors aaaaall the way in the top right corner of the color picker.

-on a side note. don't see outlander, fuck it sucks.. when's there going to be a good viking movie :(

another year over..

i haven't posted for a while, and it's been even longer since i've drawn anything >< i've got quite a long list of resolutions for the new year, and one of 'em is to rekindle my relationship with personal art; and not just pick up where i left off, i want to evolve and try some new things along the way. aside from a few freelance pieces i don't think i really drew up anything (traditional, digital or otherwise) since maybe june or july? really depressing when i think back on it, but i was busy as all hell with work, managing some episodes for an animated series and then working on cinematics for a couple games, so i supposes that's a decent enough excuse..

but excuses aside, as always, the fire seems to start back up with a self portrait. my artsy roommates and i are all getting our '2009' illustrations ready. you know, to use on myspace, facebook, etc.. though i've abandoned myspace and i don't have a facebook :P

i just finished up the 'inking' process and boy does it feel good to draw something again.. i've been veeeery inspired by mignola and wendling lately, and i've decided to try to push myself a bit more in their direction. hopefully this will be the beginning of a nice little journey. we'll see how it goes. this is also another first for me, i've finally put my now 9 month old corgi pup, 'harvington-reginald short stuff wallbanger', or just harvey, down on paper (digital paper that is). that's one big brick off my shoulders, how could i have not drawn my dog yet?! aaaaAAAAHHHHHaaa!!

colors to come soon, before the end of january at least. and maybe a few more things will peak over the horizon soon too.

Return from San Diego

I got back from San Diego last night at about 7:30, and I am beyond exhausted. I had such a good time though, and got to chat it up with SO many awesome people, as well as get back together with a bunch o' peeps that I haven't seen in a good while. I already can't wait for next year (though I have no problem resting for a year first).

I'll post up some photos and what not after I've recovered from the trip.

Doodle Progress, life in general

I've been spending the last couple weeks working away and bonding with my new puppy. I'll have to post up some more pictures sometime soon. I'm beyond ecstatic with my new com padre "Harvington-Reginald Short Stuff Wallbanger", or simply, Harvey. Other than that, work has been picking up more and more as the schedule for the show becomes more hectic.

I've seen a few movies that I haven't rated yet; some good, some not as good:

Now's for The Dark Knight. God I can't wait for that.. and, the animated Batman Gotham Knight was pretty fuckin' sweet too.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

I don't rate games much, but this one overcomes so many existing movies cinematically that I don't have a choice but to squeeze it in here.

There are of course always going to be some things that can be nitpicked at, but there is so much in terms of perfection in this title that all of those little burps can be completely forgiven and forgotten, in my eyes at least.

This wraps up the 20 year Metal Gear saga completely, and sends Solid Snake off with an amazing final hurrah. I won't discuss the story at all, because there is merely too much in this saga to try and put in a nutshell, but I'll say I was incredibly satisfied and torn emotionally. While it's hard to say goodbye to Snake, I'm just happy he received a deserving leave of absence.

MGS Doodle Progress

I'm geeking out incredibly in anticipation for the new Metal Gear Solid game this week and I wanted to do a little illustration for each of the three Solid titles out so far. I started on this one of Snake and Meryl but keep finding myself NOT working on it. So in case I don't get around to knocking the rest of it out before the release of the new one I wanted to at least have some WIP posted for it as proof that I DID care enough to at least try, haha..

Corgi Come Lately

I am FIIIIINALLY getting my Corgi.

I grew up my entire life with dogs and had my own personal Shepard through most of my childhood and through high school (though of course couldn't take him with me when I moved to San Fran for college).. and unfortunately he passed away when I was nearing the end of my college education. But now that I'm done with school and have been out working in the industry for over a year I've decided it was time to get a dog back in my life. Especially after my roommate Steve got his Pug, and it seems like SOOOooo many other people that I know have dogs and I just get the fact smashed upon my face.

I've been wanting a Corgi for years now, and got lucky enough to find this little fellow (currently 5 weeks of age and called Short Stuff by the breeders). I will be his new Pappy after June 26th - a late birthday present to myself :) I'm so F*CKING excited.

Last weekend a few of my buddies and i trecked down to Amoeba on Haight to see Tim and Eric from the show of the same name on [adult swim] (our show aired right before theirs in the line up, whheeee!)

They were apparently hung over and full of witty banter, here they are sitting at a table AND signing things at the SAME TIME. how they multi task in such ways, i shall never understand.. the larger faces in the top photo are two o' my buddies, chris vear (left) and jonathan richardson (other left). such crisp cellphone pichures :)

Finally. FINALLY. FINALLY! Marvel FINALLY did one right. It sticks close enough to the original story while still taking it in a nice direction for modern audiences. Downey is a great Stark and Bridges is always good, Big Lebowski man! My only complaint would have to be that there wasn't enough of Iron Man himself, I wanted more. But, the extra bit at the end of the credits more than made up for it by escalating my geekdom..

No point trying to catch people up, a lot has happened, I'm back working and we just moved to a new studio that is quite bitchin! I also just finished up a big side project doing some concept work for another potential animated series. Hopefully I'll be able to post those up in the future. and HOPEFULLY I'll actually start posting up some more doodles and what not, I've been trying to get myself back in the groove of sketching..

aaah yes, and regarding Xavier below, the first season finished it's prelinary run on [adult swim] in January and is going to be getting a second season! Hurray! If you haven't seen it, you should! And if you have seen it, I'm sorry for your brain..

Well it's almost done! Xavier's only got a week or two left until we've wrapped the beast up. AND the first two spots have surfaced on [adult swim] and youtube. If I didn't mention it before, Xavier is the next venture from the Wonder Showzen creators, PFFR, and my little studio (well not MY studio, I just work there), Cinematico, is the visual laborer. It should be airing on November 1st.

We just wrapped on our first two episodes for the series we're doing for Adult Swim, and we were graced with quite the nifty cake (can't legally show it to you until the show airs in November...just, use your imagination for GOD'S SAKE!)

Anywho, my friend Steve had stopped by and was bullied into taking a picture of the whole crew, atleast all of us who were there, a few people are missing :(

Unity Tour

This one's a little late, but oh well.

I saw 311 with Matisyahu and the Dirty Heads on Aug 26. Really a great show, full of energy. And Chad Sexton's drum solo was pretty sweet, ESPECIALLY when he coordinated the rest of the band in to a drumline! AGH! I've been wanting to see 311 for years; I don't care if you don't like 'em, fuck you!

And Matisyahu was a great bonus, in which I'd of been happy seeing him alone, really great live! Blew my mind!

I just got my logo permanently inked into my forearm. Not only does the L stand for my name and the last four years of my life, but it can also be for the simple fact that it's on my left arm :) Up next is my right arm, no guys, I don't think I'm doing the R for right...though that is funny, and my calf tattoo, which is going to be in the works for a while still..

I've been without TV for 1 1/2 years or so, resorting to purchasing (which usually means downloading for free) the few shows that I think are worth taking up my unprecious time. I've known that Battlestar was a good one, and I had seen a few episodes back when it started but I never allowed myself to get sucked into it, I already had too many seasons of shit to catch up on while I was finishing school.

But now, I've finally indulged and have been sucked in completely. Resorting in buying the first two seasons and downloading the third (because it's not available yet). There are few shows that are worth my honesty and money, and this is definitely one of them.

My friend Steve asked Vear and myself to put together a song for him ala Flight of the Conchords (folk-comedy-duo) to use as a soundtrack for a project in one of his classes. Vear and I started strumming mindlessly on our stringy-tars and throwing ideas at eachother and came up with an early premise, tentatively titled Sir Steve of the Valley, and the Beast of Gaelic Descent. The folky narrative sparked an image in my mind so I threw this together last night, using the famous Trail's End and a pinch of Don Quixote as inspiration..

Aside from a sketch here and there, this is the last thing I've drawn in the past, oooh, two months or so? I've been so busy with work that I just haven't gotten around to drawing. Terrible excuse I know, I'm especially ashamed.

Squaders Innitiated

Squaders is the tentative title for a web comic based on my friends and i, and multiple people that we've met in and out of college during the last few years. The stories circulate mostly around our base group of friends, or the 'bomb squad'; hence the title.. anyways, we've been INTENDING to start this, like so many other things, for a couple years now to no avail; due to other priorities and procrastination of course.

About a week ago though, a handful of us were drawn into a mutli-hour long battle of airsoft guns, cleaning products, indoor rain storms, falsified electrical prowess, and memories of John McClain among other things. In a word, it was glorious. And even more so, what lead to this pinnacle of squad moments, was the the mere fact that my roommate Steve and I didn't want the end of the 7th Potter book ruined for us before we finished it.. those bastards. You know who you are.

After the evening's escapades withered down and we recounted our endeavours with each other we decided it's time to finally start this thing. So I've thrown a couple doodles together, based off our crazy night, in preparation for our opening strip, which will be this indoor war. Hopefully I'll be able to juggle some free time outside of work this week to begin the strip itself. We shall see.

I noticed that my friend, Chris Vear had a blog spot, and in a nutshell, I couldn't allow him to have something that I did not. Plain and simple. Enough said.

Alright fine. Aside from my need to continue the non-existent e-battle with the Vury, I figured that like so many others, I'd use this place as an escape from my professional site (which is under REconstruction still, of course) in order to spill the random thoughts that might not be so appropriate for my normal website. along with some various doodles, which will probably pop up on all my other pages anyways..

But realistically, I'll have started this, like so many other things, and lose immediate interest, resulting in a couple updates per year. Who knows.
