Chris Morley and Tom Gibbons over at Tippett used my little turtle to set up some lights in order to take photos of everyone's munny-pieces from the holiday party:

munny, munny, munny MUUUUNNY
this weekend was the Tippett Studio holiday party, and @ last year's shindig some of us started a little competition, taking some blank dunnies and turning them in to whatever our hearts desired. it was an awesome little addition to the already fun times. this year we decided to continue it, but step it up to the larger munny figures.
the turnout was AWESOME this year, and we had a full designated wall to display them this time around, so it actually felt like a small art gallery when you entered the room. there were some truly great pieces this year, and i'm hoping that stirs people up and this will become an even larger event in the years to come.
this year i decided to do a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. and i left him without a weapon, so he could be any turtle i wanted him to be (the originals all had red bandannas, so no that's not necessarily raphael) - i unfortunately didn't remember to take very many photos of my progress, but i did get a few and wanted to post 'em up!
munny > primer > super sculpey > baked @ 275 for 15 min > acrylic > varnish > fabric-store scraps > DONE!
MUTANT LAND Goes Live
Ain't It Cool has posted up the first public link to a short that we did a while back @ Tippett Studio (I was lucky enough to jump in at the end of it). Mutant Land is loosely based on the world of Mutant World by Jan Strnad & Richard Corben. It would be pretty great to get this developed in to a full feature..

Breaking Dawn - Podcast
here's a nice little podcast with fxguide, talking to both our cg supe Eric Leven and lead animator Hans Brekke. Eric gives a nice run down on the over all process for Tippett's work on the wolves - and about halfway through Hans goes over some of the process for developing the lumber yard sequence.

Tippett Studio in the News
so a couple weeks ago, the Bay Area news program Eye on the Bay had a special on films in the east bay - and one of the main places they covered was Tippett Studio! They give you a super simplified look at the studio and it's history, and talk a bit with Phil himself.
wait until about 1:50 in the video to see the Tippett Coverage (and if you wait until about 4:33, you'll get a quick glimpse of my work buddy Robert Alves, and myself, workin' away)
and HERE is a link to the video, in case the embedded one craps out

Drawaholic: Real Life Toons - Dexter
fiiiiiinally got around to doing another doodle for the DRAWAHOLICS blog - this week's theme was to take a 2D cartoon character, and render them in a more realistic fashion. i went for Dexter, from Dexter's Laboratory. might try to give him a legit color pass later on, might not :P could also be fun expanding the image to see his whole body

Cowboys vs. Smurfs - Double Opening Weekend
so this weekend marked the opening of TWO films that i had the pleasure of working on. the first was The Smurfs, in which we tackled Azrael (the cat) over at Tippett Studio. and the second was Cowboys & Aliens, which consisted of some alien and spacecraft wrangling back at ILM.
i had a great time working on both, and it fulfilled a very large goal for me to be able to work on a movie starring harrison ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time). it's also fun seeing two movies that are so different go head to head on an opening weekend, and actually come out neck and neck :)

Drawaholic: Musical Inspiration - Beatles
i've been falling a little behind on the DRAWAHOLICS blog, but i'm starting to play catch up now. here's my musical inspiration. i was originally going to redo the Let it Be album cover in the fashion of Gorillaz' Demon Days, but ended up just turning in to a profile line up ;P

American Carny (Drawaholic: Carnies)
so i actually wrangled up some time to paint up last week's carny sketch for the DRAWAHOLICS blog. it's been a good long while since i've attempted to go this extensive with the painting. it feels good to get my digital brush wet again ;P - i decided to keep it black and white, give it a more era-appropriate feel (and man is it nice only worrying about tone and not having to deal with that whole, COLOR thing, haha)
i definitely won't be taking all the submissions this far, but hopefully i can keep it up with a few of 'em..
oh and yes, this was based on the classic painting American Gothic

Official Mermaid Concept Art
a few weeks ago Entertainment Weekly released some concept art for one of the mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here's the scan of Syrena from the magazine. These mermaids have been incredibly fun and challenging to work on, and I can't wait to see everything finished and on the big screen!

Kitty Galore earns a VES Nomination!
Tippett's work on Kitty Galore for Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore earned a nomination in the Visual Effects Society for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture. I'm so happy that they're able to acknowledge the great work done by the studio on this character (regardless of the film's overall reception)! Way to go!

employee #274110
one of my supervisors from Tippett, Jim Brown (AWESOME animator, and just a super-swell guy), did me the honor of including me in his awesome 'drawing a day' series on his blog:
click me, right here!!
he made a resolution for 2010 to do a drawing every single day of the year, and he actually finished it! not something many people can say! check. it. out.
